FRAGILE EXISTENCE
The work ‘Fragile Existence’,  seeks to highlight the tension that exists between the way we live in and develop the built environment and the plants and animals with which we co-exist.  Printed onto porcelain houses are images of around 40 Peel region plants and animals listed as vulnerable, endangered, or highly endangered. Placed in amongst suburban homes, the installation of these fragile species and their ‘homes’ aims to highlight their vulnerability. The houses are installed on a background that references the way the landscape has been modified, and habitats destroyed, to make way for urban development. The use of porcelain as a material for the works and the arrangement of the installation, also poses a broader question: that perhaps it is not just the plants and animals that are vulnerable and fragile?
This work was selected as a finalist in the 2022 Macquarie Group Emerging Art Prize. Click for the catalogue.
